Background of the Study

Unemployment is a significant social issue with wide-ranging consequences, particularly in developing regions like Niger State, Nigeria. It is associated with a variety of negative outcomes, including economic hardship, social exclusion, and mental health disorders. Research has consistently demonstrated that unemployment increases the risk of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and stress (Olatunji et al., 2023). In Niger State, where the unemployment rate is high, particularly among men, these mental health challenges are exacerbated by factors such as limited job opportunities, rural poverty, and a lack of social safety nets.

The stress of not having a stable income can lead to feelings of hopelessness and frustration, further compounding mental health disorders. For men, in particular, the societal expectation of being primary breadwinners places additional pressure on their mental health when they are unable to fulfill this role (Agboola & Kazeem, 2024). This study will explore the relationship between unemployment and mental health disorders among men in Niger State, focusing on how joblessness contributes to psychological distress and the mechanisms that mediate this relationship.

Statement of the Problem

In Niger State, the unemployment rate among men is alarmingly high, and this issue has significant implications for their mental health. However, the relationship between unemployment and mental health disorders among men in the state remains underexplored. This study seeks to investigate how unemployment contributes to mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and stress, and how these disorders manifest in the daily lives of unemployed men.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of unemployment on mental health disorders among men in Niger State.
  2. To examine the types of mental health disorders prevalent among unemployed men in Niger State.
  3. To identify coping strategies employed by unemployed men in Niger State to manage mental health challenges.

Research Questions

  1. How does unemployment contribute to mental health disorders among men in Niger State?
  2. What are the common mental health disorders experienced by unemployed men in Niger State?
  3. What coping mechanisms do unemployed men in Niger State use to mitigate the effects of unemployment on their mental well-being?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Unemployment is significantly associated with higher levels of mental health disorders among men in Niger State.
  2. Depression and anxiety are the most common mental health disorders experienced by unemployed men in Niger State.
  3. Coping strategies such as social support and exercise mitigate the negative mental health effects of unemployment among men in Niger State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on men aged 18-50 years who are currently unemployed in Niger State. Limitations include potential difficulties in gathering self-reported mental health data and the inability to control for external factors, such as family dynamics or pre-existing mental health conditions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Mental Health Disorders: Conditions that affect a person’s thinking, feeling, behavior, or mood, leading to distress or impaired functioning.
